Traditionally, women were labeled as homemakers. They had no role to play in regards to the provision or earnings of the household. Over centuries, we have seen tremendous evolution in the lives of women. The bodies delegated to change the refrigeration laws and policies have and are continuing to do a wonderful job in empowering and protecting the girl child. Today being International Women’s Day, we are going to look at how far women have come over the centuries.
Women and employment
A quarter of a century ago, it was a struggle for women to access jobs in a highly male-dominated society. It was even more difficult for women who choose fields where it was believed only a man can thrive. Poverty made them vulnerable in terms of gender and economic situations. In today’s world, women have been able to break career barriers. Financial independence has given women voices to fight for their rights, empowering younger generations and taking control of their future. In as much as there still is a lot more to be done, we have to acknowledge the efforts done by those before us and the great impact they continue to have in our lives.
Women and Education
We have seen tremendous growth, especially in this sector. Women and girls today can access quality education and vocational training. Education has long been identified as one of the most significant steps to gender equality. It has made women more independent, able to challenge gender stereotypes and at the same time boost the economy. While access to education is easier for girls than it used to be, some 129 million worldwide are still out of school in 2022.
Women and access to health
Access to adequate health services from sexual health to mental health to nutrition has seen huge growth over the years. Women are now able to access services such as birth control pills and other contraceptives. However, there is still a major challenge for many women around the world in regards to health care. Organizations and persons of interest are still working to end harmful practices such as early marriages, female genital mutilation (FGM) among others within this area of concern. The World Health Organization says an estimated three million girls are at risk of being cut every year. Approximately every one in five women is uninsured or has been at one point in her life.
Violence Against Women
Violence against women remains a universal problem, although it is more severe in some countries than others. From physical violence at home to sexual violence, to children defilement at home and within the society. More and more cases are coming out each day. Countries have implemented laws designed to curtail all sorts of violence. But there is still much more work to be done when it comes to legal protection and essential services for women needing to escape violent situations.
Women in Leadership
In recent years, women have made major strides towards better representation in positions of power. But from elected office to the boardroom, there is still a long way to go before true equal representation is achieved. Establishing laws and encouraging political participation are just but a few ways of how women can increase their influence on both a local and global level.
Women in Media
Media is a highly successful tool when it comes to passing on information and educating. Women have and are continuing to occupy positions in Media. This has, in turn, helped control narratives about matters concerning them, serve as role models for their young audience and encourage the production of gender-sensitive material.
Conclusion
Locally and on a global level, there is still a lot to be done in a lot more sectors than the above mentioned to improve and continue to empower girls and women. For example, Issues of violence have seen a rise over the past years. However, it is important to also acknowledge the strides that have so far been made by those before us how they continue to impact our lives for the better. It is with great honor that I thank every woman who fought before us, those still fighting for us, and those who will grow to keep fighting.
Happy International Women’s Day Queens!👸 💃
